Exploring Listening Fatigue in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children
Title: Tired Ears, Busy Minds: Exploring Listening Fatigue in Deaf or Hard of Hearing Children
WHEN YOU COMPLETE THE REGISTRATION FORM BELOW, YOU WILL HAVE IMMEDIATE ACCESS TO THE RECORDED WEBINAR
Brief Description
Listening and understanding can be challenging for deaf/hard of hearing (DHH) individuals, and the effort put into that task can lead to significant fatigue. Researchers have learned that much about fatigue in DHH in the last decade, from measurement techniques, including questionnaire development, to some potential mitigating factors. Of note, the concept of listening-related fatigue is not always well known to DHH individuals and families themselves. Additional work in the realm of education is needed. This presentation will focus on key concepts and terms, measurement of fatigue, case studies, and family-friendly language to discuss fatigue with children and families.
Presenter
Presenter: Dr. Hilary Davis is an educational audiologist in a school district in Nashville, TN. Prior to this role, she spent a decade at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, serving as a pediatric clinical, research, and educational audiologist. During that time, she worked in several research labs and focused several years on Dr. Fred Bess’ Listening Related Fatigue projects. She now utilizes that experience and knowledge in her day-to-day practice as an educational audiologist. When not at work, you’ll find her at dance class, reading, or chasing her three kids (ages 1, 3, and 6!).
Learning Objectives: As a result of participating in this webinar, participants will be able to:
- define the concept of listening-related fatigue (LRF) and various measurement methods to identify fatigue-related problems
- use parent and child friendly language to discuss the topic of LRF
- understand the use for the Vanderbilt Fatigue Scales through specific cases
This webinar was previously provided live on February 6, 2026
